Which APS-C camera under $800 is considered #1?

My wife would like a camera and we have set a budget for $800.  Now I have an old Nikon D200, but she is open to any brand.  I don't keep up on the newer cameras so much and would be grateful for your suggestions on this.

The D7100 lists for a bit more than $800.

I would suggest sticking with Nikon, since your lenses will still be of use. A D5300 (body only) should be in your budget and perform quite well, except that it requires AF-S lenses. If you have non-motorized lenses you wish to keep, then a D7000 (again, body only) would be worth considering, and it is just beneath your price point.

Actually you can get a used Nikon D7100 on KEH for just a little above your budget: www.keh.com/camera/Nikon-Digital-Camera-...-DN029991325710?r=FE

Number 1 as in what category?... Best IQ, best low light capability?, best feature set ?.... Best is a subjective term & you need to define your constraints first...

Take her to a camera store and let her decide on which one she want's. The difference between cameras in any price range isn't that much that a newcomer might notice anything. What she will notice is how it looks and how it feels in her hands.

Right, because the physical store is there for you to handle the merchandise, not to actually buy anything.

Sorry to chime in, but I just disagree with this. I try to support local businesses as much as possible, and for camera equipment one may find that a local store can match an online price, and provide so much more. Online prices for this type of merchandise don't, in general, seem to be that much of a discount.

That said, I give Amazon plenty of my money, but I do like to spread my purchases around.

Wish I had local stores to shop at... Only Best Buy & other bix box stores. Only true camera store is over 40 miles away... Used to have Rirz/Wolf camera stores, but they were staffed by people who knew very little, at least not up to my level of knowledge. Seems they catered more to the point & shoot crowd. I asked them some fairly simple questions that I knew the answer too, just to test their knowledge.... They failed miserably... I spread my money around for camera  too, just not locally, unless you count KEH camera (about 25-30 miles from me), but they have no showroom, only internet & phone ordering.

Now there's an idea that stirs me to comment. How is it that you expect there to be a camera store available for you to use for a hands on try out, if you are not willing to buy from them? I was in Gatlinburg, TN last weekend and met a poor fellow who owned a traditional Camera Store. He used to have a thriving business, but was now on his last legs because of Internet shopping. I understand the urge to save a few bucks, but it's just not right to rub salt in the wound by abusing their investment in having inventory available for Customers to buy and stealing their time to show it to you when you have no intention of giving them the business. I can't change the economic incentives that are driving this, but please remember who caused it when all of the brick and mortar stores are gone and you want to complain about it.

p.s. I was happy to see a few others expressing the same sentiment while I was typing my reply.

Another big part of his failure is the inability to conform to market forces. Does this fellow have an internet presence ? Where is he set up & what does his rent run ?.... I've been to Gatlinburg & it's pretty well commercilized, meaning high overhead to run a store.  That said, I wouldn't handle items in a camera store & then go looking on the internet for them. I'd rent those items online & make my decision. Just handling them for a short while in the store would tell me nothing except possibly ergonomic values...Renting them would give me a more in depth look into the items features that just handling in a store never could do...
