Advice on auto back up of photos?

9 years 11 months ago #374284 by Ottis
First day on this site and my other question got answered so quick (thanks again), so I'm going to ask another! Nearly 2 years ago I had a PC hard drive failure and all my files were lost.  This included some client photos and personal ones.  Since then, I have been manually backing up photos on these WD portable hard drives.  Because I'm doing this manually, there isn't a set schedule for doing this.   It's a mundane process that sometimes I forget to do.  I'd like to see what I can do for automation.

Any gurus on this subject who can help me out please?  Thank you in advance.

I guess we have a RAID1 forum here?

I have yet to find a piece of software that I can tell exactly what and when to backup to a local NAS, including exclusions. I have tried Memeo, but it is a non-stop service that doesn't properly respect files that are inuse (e.g. the iTunes catalog) and seems to work in an all-or-nothing mode. I've been thinking about writing myself some perl scripts and running them under Cygwin. That way I could get the logic that I want.

I will not use an online service at 1 MB / sec upload speeds. Ain't nobody got time for that, not the way I generate data.

Are you Mac or PC?  I know you had a PC, did you stick with it or move to Mac?

Windows 8.1. Far too much of an investment to change now. Besides, I don't care for Apple as a company.

The downside to Carbinite is the first download can take forever.

Personally I am another Raid user. That and I backup my photos on my external once a month while I am online. Then I put my external in its fireproof safe when I am done. Backup needs to be a habit that becomes second nature anymore. I rarely backup anything more than my photos, as they are the only part of the system I cannot easily replace. Everything else is pretty much programs, which I have the disks for.

So true!  But once it is, it's convenient.
