One photo 2 Editors 3 Edits.

Using this photo taken by my friend at Studio One Hong Kong:

We had a friendly competition to see who could edit it the most "Artistically".  We were given one hour exactly.

Here are the results:

My friend went for an old style look, to make it look like he took the photo in an old ballet studio back in the "ol' days".  I think he nailed it.

Whereas I tried to emphasise and play more with the difference between the light and dark areas.  I also wanted the model to glow in a hyper real way.  I also converted my colour image to black and white (just because I like black and white).  In addition I replaced the background a little.

I feel neither of us really won.  They're all good in their own way (my friend agrees).  Goes to show, there's many ways to approach a picture.

Was just chatting with my friend and we both agree that our favourite would really depend on which kind of room you're going to hang the photo.

If it were a kind of old fashioned room with lots of old books the first one would be the choice.

If it were a super modern but monochromatic room (like mostly white), the second one would be the way to go.

If it were a bright and colourful modern room, the last one would be the bee's knees.

The first does the best job of capturing musculature, which is apparently important (I learned last week at a ballet shoot). The last is prettier to look at. The B&W conversion is probably the most successful, aesthetically overall.

Coming back and looking I think I like #2 more myself too. #3 is close though. #1 is nice too, depends on my mood.

No 2 for me. although I can appreciate all 3.

Here is one that I shot with a photographer that I was mentoring. We where debating which style clients would like better so we set up this image and posted it on facebook and got really interesting replies:

Why do you think...

#3 for me.  The first one blue is off, the second one looks washed out, leaving #3 for fav

Prefer the (apparent) crispness of #3, but needs more color. The B&W isn't contrasty enough.

I'm guessing most like 1 or 2.  3 is a bit "dark" for a wedding photo (racists?)
