Question about safety and freelance photo journalist

9 years 11 months ago #377513 by ShutterPal
I have a question about freelance photo journalist and traveling to dangerous locations in the world.  If you wanted to fly to let's just say Ukraine or Serbia on your dime, armed only with your camera and U.S. Passport.  Your purpose there is to capture some of the violence and to sell the photos to media sources.

Is there any sanctions that allows photo journalist safe passage around?  Or is this a situation where you are on your own and that's it?

Brother you are on your own there.  I'd get to know where the closest American embassy.

Photographers that are sent by the media to these places take many precautions and are often given additional training to deal with the things that may occur. If you are going to do this I would recommend investing in some serious protective equipment and some kind of private security.

In my younger days I travelled to areas in fiji during a military coup and Papua New Guinea and both where very scary. In New Guinea I have an armed escort. Let me tell when you are in the middle of a civil riot and the local military are getting ready you want to be out of the way.

Mate... think about your safety first!

Alan brings up a good point.  Perhaps if you do move forward, seek out a professional bodyguard at your location.

Dangerous and full of risk.  I would seriously look at some of the advice given here.

Even if a photographer is freelance they would most likely be shooting for some news or other media outlet; travel arrangements would be made I think thru the media outlet that contracted them.
