If you wanted to get published in magazine, how would you go about submitting photos?

What's the process to insure great traction with the people at magazines who filter though photos?  Do you digitally send samples or would you send actual printed copies on nice paper?

I have always heard that that is a really hard market to get into.

Usually somewhere in tiny tiny print towards the front of the magazine will be their rules for photo submissions.  Keep in mind magazines get buried with photographers trying to get their attention.  So you'll want to pay attention very closely to what their rules of submission are.  If something doesn't match up or you didn't follow rules exactly, you'll be over looked.

I do not know of your magazines, but in South Africa magazines structures differ.
You must know the "culture of the magazine very well.
If they have a picture editor (or whoever chooses the images), try to see him/her in person.
Offer them coffee in a coffee shop.
Show them (him/her) the 10-15 shot on your laptop that you think would fit in with their topics.
You might have great shots with artistic flair, but they do a lot of research of their target market and what the style of photos should be.
Let them give feedback. If you can, RECORD it to play back many times before you go out for more shots to make sure you fit in with their style.

I would start by trying to make some connections on linkedin (and/or Facebook) with the people in the publications that you want to target. Then work on adding value to their lives....then slip in a hint that you would love to be published.
