Um, you were mistaken?
It turns out that you don't want to go any more than 30 seconds or you get star trails. 2 - 4 minutes is far too long for sharp point of light. At least without a rig that compensates for the rotation of the earth.
Gary is correct here. So unless you are stitching star trails, you'll want to keep those exposure times much less. Nikon D300 24-70mm f2.8
