New memory card format on it's way?

9 years 8 months ago #399377 by EOS_Fan
I attended a photography Meetup group on Saturday and one of the people there was talking about a new memory card format that was rumored to be coming that would replace SD and CF in the main stream cameras.  For the life of me, I can't remember the name of it and I have done all sort of searches to find details.  Do you know what the name of this format is?

Can't imagine what that would be, given the clear fact that SD and its derivatives have won the market. Ask Sony about memory card formats (and video tape, for that matter). Hey, at least they won with BluRay.

Was there any indication as to the advantages of a new form factor? What problem needs to be solved?

I did some searches and came up empty handed, nothing found to suggest anything new coming.  Perhaps something will be announced at Photokina?

You're probably thinking of XQD cards. The D4 (and D4s) uses them (only camera I can think of that uses them). They're "better" than other formats, but no one wants to use them.

Typical Sony, introducing a "better" format and expecting people to follow them... mini disc anyone?! ;)

I had forgotten about that one. To be fair, they've had a number of successes as well.

Is there a need for a new card style?

Canon 7D, 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 70-200mm L f/2.8, 100mm and 17-55mm f/2.8

There is always a need for new things if they actually are an improvement to existing tech. It was not that long ago when people questioned why I needed a 1 gig drive, or over 500mb of memory. With some of the file sizes that image capturing is headed toward, faster storage is always a good thing. Now the real problem is that the cameras need to match that speed as far, as dumping its data. That is where the current bottleneck is.
