Mirrorless, the future of photography?

9 years 8 months ago #400704 by Hassner
I read everywhere that mirrorless is the future of photography? Is this not one prediction that is going to fail? This has been going for more than a year, and I've only seen a few tourists and a few student trendies with them.

Evidently you don't live in Asia.

Mirrors will last for a while longer, just like disc spinning Hard Drives have hung on in the face of the SSD. It's a matter of relative cost, and capability. Eventually floppy discs and cassette tapes disappeared, and mirror flipping cameras now represent that level of technology relative to what's coming from Mirrorless.

The technology is simply making a comeback... Before DSLR/SLR's  most all cameras were mirrorless

Making a comeback is still not "taking over". They became popular in the '90's as well for the party life, where bigger cameras drew too much attention. The 3rd camera for some press guys. (One was b&w film, two was slide film.)

They are too small for my hands. I have the battery grip attached to my camera only for a better grip and extra weight for a sturdy hold.

SLR's/DSLR's were the first mass marketed cameras to use mirrors in the optical path... Older rangefinders, TLR's, view cameras et al never had mirrors (long before the 90's). So, when I say making a comeback, that's exactly what's happening...  Now if you are only referencing the current crop of mirrorless cameras, they are still  simply a technological update to those older cameras

So what can't your DSLR do now that it could before "mirrorless"? I see way too much fretting over nothing....

Why so serious?

Until they totally eliminate lag time mirrors will still be used. In reality there is a way to get rid of the mirrors without the EVF crap. As Scott pointed out there were many cameras that did just fine without them. But I do not see them coming back in the near future. Right now the largest market for conventional SLR cameras is the US.

I'm surprised the Americas are up to even 17%.  Except for Best Buy, stores in my city don't carry mirrorless.  When they did try stocking mirrorless nobody bought them.

So next time I read an article that says mirrorless is the future, I will write my comment.

Thanks Major Magee. Would be interesting to see a comparison SLR/mirrorless to Asia.

At the bottom end of Africa we might not always be in touch with world trends, but we are huge as a location for movies, stills, (fashion shoots). Cape Town has two huge camera rental places with all the latest gear that might be requested by visiting photographers and videographers. For interest sake I'll ask them if they had any requests for mirrorless.
