When a client offers you a beer...

9 years 7 months ago #404126 by D Hornick
at a social event you are photographing.  Will you accept or say no?  This just happened to me and I turned it down.  The client had a few in him already and seemed a little offended with my answer.  "You never turn down a free beer, that's rude"-client.  I told him I needed to keep a clear head while I finish up the job, however after I was done and camera no longer in my hand, I'd be happy to join him with a beer.  Honestly, I thought it was a  good answer.

How do you handle situations like this?

Nope I wouldn't.  I don't care how gregarious someone comes across at an event or job that I'm hired to photograph.  I won't drink any alcoholic beverages regardless how voracious they are for me to join them.

Easy. NEVER would I drink with or in the presence of a client. That goes for smoking a number, whiffing a line, boiling a spoon or Russian Roulette....;)

Why so serious?

I image if my accountant pulled out a beer while doing my taxes... I would say, "Mum can't you wait until after breakfast for a drink!!" All jokes aside I am a professional and I act as I would expect any other professional to act. I certainly would be annoyed if my Accountant, Lawyer, Bank Teller, Hell I would be annoyed if my dry cleaners was drinking on the job!!!!!!!!!

"Thank you, that's very kind of you. But I'm working right now, so I'll have to decline."

If it's a paying client, I won't have anything but bottled water or my diet Coke

I think you gave the correct answer Derrick. I would have said the same thing, and never had one at any point. Since by the time you were done the customer sounds as if they would have been too blistered to notice. My drinking habit is like a beer, or two during the holidays, or a couple of glasses of wine then at dinners. Business and drinking do not mix, as drinking and driving do not.

Yep, good answer you gave.  The guy was most likely hammered already had a blind spot in their reasoning and judgment.

First off, I don't drink that much to begin with.  It has to be really special occasions for that to happen.  So for me, I'd just let him know that I don't drink and thank him for the offer.

when on the clock, no booze here.  You responded pretty much the same as I would.
