Why aren't there any semi affordable panoramic cameras?

Well let me clarify 'digital' panoramic camera.  You can find some older film models that are priced fairly.  But why no digital panoramic specific cameras that are less than the cost of a trip around the world in the Concord?

I was looking at the Panoscan MK 3 system, but that sold for a shocking $40,000!  I was able to find a used one for $23,000.  What a bargain.

Or you can go with the Fiji 617 used from B&H for $1500 or so.  Seriously, why are there so limited options?

If what you mean is taking a panoramic shot, just stitch a few photos together in post. Simple and has infinite possibilities for what you can do, all for the price of any digital camera on the market

Most likely because there isn't a huge market for them.  Most of the cameras have some sort of pano feature in them.  Heck, my iPhone does

I like panoramic photo's, make a lot of mine pano. But I don't know how to stitch shots together so I simply crop a photo to panoramic. Doesn't work to well with my D70 sometimes, not enough pixels, but works fine with my D5000.

$40,000 you are talking about one heck of a specialty piece of equipment.

Well pano cameras have always been on the expensive side, even in the film days. I had only ever saw one live in the wild being used back then up at the Grand Canyon. Any form of very specialized equipment costs you more because the demand is not that great, hence the manufacturer has to make the money faster. In our digital age I see using one as well stupid. It is so easy to actually stitch multiple images together to make a good one. Now all you need is a good tripod, and they make heads that make shooting panos easy.

If I had $40K I would not buy a pano camera. I'd buy maybe a 150-600 Tamron that worked on my D5000 and take a trip to Africa. Having that kind of money to spend then spending it on a camera and not being able to afford a trip you really want is foolish to me.

For $40,000 I would buy a nice shiny Hasselblad.  I'd get much more use from that camera than a pano

Well $40,000 for a camera is just absurd.  Who in the right mind would spend that kind of money for a camera?

I know, it's priced up there.  I'm sure there are people out there spending this kind of cash all day long, it's just a bit from my reach  :(
