If you're talking about shooting only the moon, it's a very easy shot.  It's just a front-lit subject in direct sunlight.
• Use the longest lens available to you
• Use a tripod
• Use manual exposure mode ... and manual focus
• Set your focus at infinity and leave it there
• Set aperture at f/11 and shutter speed at the reciprocal of your ISO (or the equivalent settings)
• Frame it and Shoot

Looks like my title got chopped.  But yes I was talking about photographing the moon.  I appreciate your answer.  What I'm trying to find here are some advanced tips on getting those cool silhouette shots of something in front of the moon and yet both are in focus and sharp.  I love those shots where the moon is actually noticeable in your photo and doesn't look like a dot on the horizon.

As Bob stated it depends on if I am just shooting the moon, or if I am using a foreground. For a full bright moon then I use the Looney 11 rule. Which is f/11 @ a given ISO with the shutter speed being the same as the ISO, so if you are using 400 ISO your shutter is at 400. With the foreground then it is whatever I need it to be to make it either a silhouette, or when using a graduated ND to get the exposure right. These are usually sunrise/set photos.

Well, you'd think the above was the only option, based on everything you read.  Turns out it's not.

This was taken at f/2.8, 1/250, ISO 100, 200mm. And some Lightroom 5 fun. 2 nights ago, outside of Ft. Stockton, TX on the way to Big Bend.

Yes, the Nikon VRII. Cropped, of course, but the image is adequately sized.
