Back up camera gear in case of emergency?

9 years 5 months ago #411702 by Nick Whitman
Yesterday I attended one of those photography Meetup groups here.  It was fun, I would recommend.  I met some new photographers and some very interesting people at the same time.  For example one photographer who might I add, had some very nice equipment.  But what stood about this guy, was that he had complete doubles of everything in his camera bag.  Literally.  "Everything will fail sooner or later, might as well be prepared for that day."  For some creepy way, this guy reminded me of someone who goes home and his house is a bunker buried in the Earth 100 feet below the ground.

Most people I know have spare batteries, spare memory cards, even spare tripods.  This guy raised that bar.  He had doubles of each lens, flash, camera body, 8 batteries, 8 or might have been 10 memory cards and the doubles keep going.

So, I get the need of having spare memory cards and batteries.  I just think have double lenses and flashes seems excessive.  Having more flashes because you want the extra light is one thing, but having the extra flashes because you want for back up is not needed in my opinion.

How do you feel about this?

If he's a pro and uses the stuff, I understand. In any event, if he's paying for the gear, I say more power to him.....;)

Why so serious?

I know a couple pro's who have back up gear and seconds of nearly everything.  When it's your lively hood, having those spares come in handy

I see the logic and if I had the funds, would love to have doubles too

Same here, if I had the spare funds, I would be all over this.
