When you get priced out of the game...

Do you reduce your price to try to get the business?   Or do you stay fixed and avoid the nickel and dime price war?  I can see pro's and con's to either or, and curious what do most do?

Competing on price is a race to the bottom. Look at Walmart.

I compare my work to others (i.e. local working, fulltime photographers), and if I can find out how much they charge it gives me an general idea of where I'm at, and where I want to be. I am freakin' bargain right now.

I will mitigate my charges if I choose to support someone's efforts: usually something to do with the arts. But I have learned not to apologize for my pricing.

When I shot for money, I NEVER chopped a quoted price. Maybe its a reason I quit and got a real job so many years ago?.....:whistle:

This is what many photographers seem to be dealing with. There are professional resources thru http://asmp.org or try PPA. ASMP has a Business as UnUsual feature on their site and do webinars on various topics (no charge, just sign up). I did one that addressed what you're talking about.

I think realistically it's a matter of thinking about if you underprice to the level of the people with cameras listing themselves on facebook and craigslist etc., is it going to be worth continuing to try to make money with your photography? or maybe you need to look at other options and possibilities.

I've found in non-photography work I've done that it can help to refer people back to the information they've already been given, remind them what was in whatever they signed, etc. Sometimes people may not have it in front of them, or may not remember all the specifics.

If they're trying to get you down pricewise, they signed the contract (I believe that's considered a legal commitment) and agreed to your pricing and that's what you adhere to (in a professional firm and friendly way). I usually state things in a factual way as appropriate to the situation (remember in the contract where it says ____, that's what was agreed on, that's what we go by, etc. etc.).

Try resources for small business owners to see if you can get some ideas on various situations with clients.
