Bride wants me to take only serious photos at their wedding

This is a very odd request that I have never had before.  "We don't want any candid goofy shots, only serious photos at the ceremony or reception".  Now the ceremony, I understand to some degree.  However the reception will be tough, unless this will be held at a crypt.

Have you guys ever had such a request?

I never did, but if they are paying you, do what they ask.......in writing!

Why so serious?

Ask them specifically what kinds of pictures they want; ask about the reception, do they want pictures of people dancing? or just the cake cutting, toasts, etc.

What's planned for the reception? Get a list of events/places - will there be toasts? speeches? a bouquet toss? - do they want photos of the individual tables decorated? the head table? the band/entertainment? the entranceway/signage or anything interesting or unique about the venue?

I'd guess maybe they don't want anything like some of what they may have seen online that can be fun but could get silly.

Not my wedding, and assuming the money they are paying you with is still green and pays bills.  I'd do it.

On a off note, sounds like a potentially boring wedding!

Take the pictures and do your best to keep her wishes in mind. Then let her choose what she wants. If necessary, explain that it's digital, and you took every shot that you felt had value. She does not have to take delivery of all of them.

On the other hand, weird.

Their money and their wedding, as long as I'm paid and not doing anything unethical or breaking the law, I'll go with the flow.  But yes, sounds like a wacky wedding.

All good advice.
But Tim I am guessing she does not want you to wear the clown shoes, and nose when you show up.

We are on the same page guys.  Money talks and they are the client.  What I'm trying to figure out is how to get serious only photos.  Every reception I have photographed, people are laughing, and enjoying spirits (alcohol).  As a photographer you frame up and take the shots that express people are having a good time celebrating your day.  Taking serious only photos I fear will restrict the number of shots I could be able to take?

Unless I Photoshop frowns!

Maybe clarify what the Brides definition of what 'serious' shots actually are - ask her directly if she wants no smiling, serious portrait style shots ect - and get it in writing. Me being me I would still take 'those' moments you see just in case, as you know you cannot re-shoot it once she realises she has got a very rigid collection of images after the wedding. Serious to her may mean something totally different to what your thinking?

This is my first post on this site - Hi all :)

Though Debbie has the right approach.
I say you make a few stink bombs using Liver of Sulfur, and Ammonia, then if you see people being far too festive to get a shot let loose the frown maker in a trash can. Then you will get a nice serious shot. The effect is temporary, but gets you the desired results.
