Are there any negatives coloring effects in photos from using UV filters?

I read that UV filters are good for keeping your lens a little safer.  But I'm getting mixed reviews that these filters can cause some discoloring.  This I don't understand because they are clear aren't they?

Assuming you are buying a good UV filter, you shouldn't have any discoloring of any sort.

and even the bad ones, colour change could only be detected in labs, not by the eye. ;)

The only reason I rarely use UV filters is I'll sometimes get weird light reflection, especially at night. A good one won't mess up colors like stated above.....;)

Why so serious?

As others have said the good ones will most likely not have color cast, but I have seen some bad ones. The only thing I use, and not all the time is a straight clear with reflection coating. No color cast there. But I only use them if I know I will be either knocking my lens around, or will be in adverse conditions where I would be wiping the lens a lot. Other than that it is a bare lens.

UV filters are pretty cheap regardless, just get a good one and be done with it.

IMO, UV filters are like buying an extended warranty at the register.  A waste of $$

Raise your hand if you were talked into buying a UV filter with your first digital camera and stopped use it shortly after? :silly:

Hand raised and then had one lock up on my lens and was a PITA to remove.  It even broke!  Never again will I use one of these.
