Same as those people who say they are published authors when they have actually self published an ebook on amazon

To be a published photographer it has to be in a print book or magazine that you have no affiliation with.

I'd have to disagree with you here. While I do have images that have been in "print" in magazines, I also had an image on National Geographic's "Your Shot" "Daily Dozen" back in The 4th week of October of 2007. While it didn't make the following months print edition, it's still an accomplishment since many thousands of entries are received by that entity...

Another point to be made here also is that in today's day & age, an image published online gets lots more views than one in a printed publication..

Should it really matter?  To some, getting published in print or online will light their world on fire, others not so.  Do and say what makes you happy.

I am less worried about being published and more about getting paid.

I think having your work used in any high profile location is great and good for you portfolio but I think being published is a bit of a wank.
