Hiring a firm to act as your agency of record and marketing your photography website?

I don't know how I got on their list, but I just got a call from a company that was trying to get me to come on board with them as the agency of record for my website.  Which is odd because my website is getting built right now.  They were telling me that they would handle all the PR and marketing.  That I would not need to deal with this at all.

They of course made it sound so easy, and yet so grand at the same time.  Just curious if any of you have had such luck with a firm like this.  Is it worth it?

Marketing is such a tricky animal to tame.  I can use all the help I can get.  Assuming it works!

I'm going to have to go with "really?"

That's a come-on. We all get those offers.

And they will do nothing for you that you can't do for yourself: SEO optimization. There are lots of marketing resources out there to be found and taken advantage of.

On the other hand, if you have the funds, I'm sure they'd appreciate taking your money.

You could look up the company and see if it's legit; I'd suspect it's a telemarketing scam. (And what exactly does agency 'of record' mean??) If you want to consider a marketing firm look up some in your area. I'd expect being priced to do marketing for businesses they wouldn't exactly be inexpensive.

If you feel you want to learn more about the business aspects of photograph try sites for pro photographers like ASMP or PPA. http://asmp.org has been doing monthly webinars, you don't have to be a member and there's no cost, on their site the info. is under Business as UnUsual.
