photo contests and how do they work?

I've been in quite a bunch of the contests on here thru viewbug and I was wondering how the finalist are picked? Also I've been in a few contests where the picture made the top 10 and there were 20 finalist but yet when I looked at the finalist my picture wasn't there. I'm not really crying or anything like that I'm just kinda curious as to how the rankings go in the contests basicly. I mean I think the top 10-30 are probably actual member votes, but im not sure as to how the finalist are picked or anything else. I'm always bettering myself with my pictures and all and just wondering if im still submitting my pictures the right way for the contests like: do we just submit them only on viewbug and not here or do we have to submit on both viewbug and here? Also sorry if there is already a post on the forum somewhere on this matter but I haven't ran across it I've tried looking several times with no luck. thanks and great work to everyone on the site

Hi Michael,

On Viewbug, finalists are chosen by a panel of judges, and they also decide the winner, the only award that is given by the people is the "peoples choice" award. When you see a top 10 trifecta, that means you're photo ranked in the top 10% of all photos by votes from the people. So when you get a top 30 or top 50, that again means top 30% and top 50%.

Hope that clears that all up for you.

Cheers

:agree:  What he said.

"Voting" is for public opinion only, and produces the "People's Choice" winner. It has no impact on the selection of finalists.

It does, however, domonstrate the "people" don't always have the best taste.

The voting mechanism, the "Trifecta" results in images percolating to the top of the heap; your award is the top 10 percent of images based on voting, not the top 10. Most of the competitions are juried, which means one or more people select the finalists and the winner. The limited entry contests are simply public opinion with no jury.

It's good to make it to the top percentages; take that as a compliment. If you ever make the finals, you'll receive emails letting you know.
