Making matte finished from semi-gloss prints?

9 years 2 months ago #427535 by digitalpimp
If you have semi-gloss prints and you want to give them a matte finish, will Krylon spray be the best solution for this?  I know Krylon can get messy and I want to see if there are any other solutions that might be better.

Let me know what you think.  Thanks

Why would you want to do that?

Never mind... Assuming you are interested in changing the finish, not "preserving" it.

If this is the only copy you have, with no negative, I would not trust it to Krylon. Go to a lab and have it professionally scanned and reprinted on luster or satin paper. That way, you have a digital copy, and a print with the finish that you prefer (?)

Yes that will work.  However why not just print on matte paper?

Nikon Z6 | Nikon FM10 | Nikon D80 | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D | Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S VR | 35-105mm f/3.5 Macro | 80-200mm f/4.5 | SB600 | Pocket Wizard II

I was going to say the same thing.  Spraying anything will become a mess, although I think it would work.  But why not just start with the matte paper to print on to start with?  That would save you a ton of time and most likely clean up too!

Well the problem is will it ruin the ink? They do make an overcoat for charcoals, and chalk drawings that is pretty good. But the problem again is will it screw up the ink? You could also use a matte type of glass in the frame, assuming it is framed. Those are the anti-reflection glasses. Not sure how much they will tone down the gloss. As everyone else said just get it printed on a matte type of paper.

I might be wrong, however spraying this will be not different than spraying a protective coating on the image.  I don't think it will run assuming you don't rub it.
