Shooting with Flour or Baby Powder vs Smoke

9 years 1 month ago #436977 by Lisa Brookhurst
Hey PT.  I have a photo shoot coming up and I'd like to try using flour or baby powder rather than smoke.  Can I assume the flour and baby powder will be photographed the same way including camera settings as you would with photographing smoke?

Thanks in advance!

Seems like this would be a big mess.  Why not the smoke?  With smoke you don't need to worry about it getting into your camera.

I would stick with the smoke too.  Assuming we are talking about smoke from a machine vs harmful smoke, powder and flour will be a headache to deal with.  Plus I'm sure your models won't want to go breathing that in all day.

Not to mention that will make a mess of your cameras sensor if that powder gets in there.

Well the OP might not be concerned about the mess created, baby powder looks and gives a much different appearance than smoke does on camera.  Yes it will be photographed the way.  So practice with your speedlights on a few test shots, just be mindful of where that powder is going.

I would stay away from flour and baby power. If it gets into you camera and lens it will be a nightmare to clean!!!

Well let me ask you this:  is there a way to make the smoke have that grainy appearance like the powder?

I have seen Brooke Shaden use baby powder. I have never seen such a mess. I'm sure the studio owners wanted to kill her after that.
