What is your opinion of buying lenses from a pawn shop?

I've done it. Don't know just how good an idea it is but if the price is right I'd do it again. Only thing I've noticed is that expensive lenses never see to be there. All the lenses I've seen, most were under a hundred bucks.

Not much different than buying anywhere else. Just do your due diligence. Maybe have your ca,era with you to try it out...

My problem would be not knowing the history of what you buy in a pawn shop.

Canon 5D Mark II | Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM | Canon 35L | Sigma 85 1.4 | Helios 44M-6 58mm(M42) | Zeiss 50mm 1.4 (C/Y) | Canon 135L | (2) 430EX II

You really don't know the history of anything you buy used unless you buy it from the original purchaser...

Check it for damage, look at the actual lenses, shoot it at multiple apertures, test focus and focus speed and then see if there is any kind of fungus/moisture. After that, good to go.

Test it out before you buy, so bring your camera body with you

I have picked up several lenses at pawnshops over the years. I picked up a couple of E-Series Nikon lenses for $10 each at one. I take in my extra Nikon rear cat for those that are third party lenses that they do not know what mount they are. I only buy them if they are dirt cheap for the most part, because the shops are asis, no return for the most part.

:agree:  Just don't expect too much. You generally get what you pay for.
