What makes a photographer a "pro photographer"?

Is it one that makes money with their photography?

We (a couple friends of mine) are settling this discussion now.  Some are saying if you make $$ from photography you are a pro.  Well that doesn't sit well with me as I know some photographers who make $$, but their work and attitude are rubbish.

We all know, it's not because of your gear.

So what does constitute one being a pro photographer aside from a vanity name plate?

If you don't buy into the making a living off photography being the meaning of pro, I'll say all it takes is desire. If you want to be a pro, who am I to argue?

Why so serious?

I consider a pro as someone who makes their living as a photographer. I don't consider just making money to be the qualifier and as in any profession, there will be good pros and bad pros.

It depends in what sense you see the word 'professional'.

The body for professional photographers in my country accept membership from people who's majority income is through photography, i.e. more than 50%.

If their business ethics and work is not professional, they might not be a professional photographer (50% income) for long.

I've always considered the term to line up with those who make 90% of the living from their photography.

It's always been about making a living at the craft. Being proficient is another matter entirely...

Hmmm, if you make a legit living from photography then call yourself what makes you happy.

Part of me agrees, then the other half thinks you will have people calling themselves what ever vanity dresses them in that day.

Ok, well that answers that.  Seems like even many of you had different views on what constitutes a pro.

There are so many opinionated answers to this, and many are true.  I think the term pro photographer has become over used.  Personally I don't even bother with vanity titles.  I'm just a photographer who is going to do the best job they can.
