Amazon Prime photo storage

8 years 9 months ago #448145 by MM Images
I need to start clearing some space on my computer and wondering if anyone is storing their photos on Amazons platform?  I'm a prime member already so this could be handy for me, assuming it's secure and rates good with other photographers.

I'm a prime member as well, but I am not where I trust online storage. Amazon, Nikon, Adobe all offer space I qualify for, but I feel better having my images on a couple portable  hard drives. Try it, I'd just recommend not using ONLY Amazon's offer for your storage....;)

Why so serious?

What happens if/when they discontinue the service? I agree, I'd store in more than one place. I don't leave the responsibility of storing my photos to someone else.

And check your upload speed ( www.speedtest.net or similar).

I have fast download speeds but slow upload.  So do most people.  It will take A LONG TIME to upload a bunch of files!

Again, test it for yourself.

Good for backups, however keep copies saved on hard drives

As I pointed out in another very recent thread, Amazon only supports JPGs, and only those smaller than 2MB. Hardly worth consideration for anyone that values quality at any reasonable level. And not worthy for any serious photographer (that shoots RAW).

In other words, "meh".

Cloud is great for remote access, but for backups, you are best to have physical hard drives.

Nikon D300 24-70mm f2.8
70-200mm f2.8
50mm f1.4 & 50mm f1.8
105mm f2.8
2 SB800

Speaking of Amazon Prime, did I hear that the price is going up again this year?

I don't know what you're talking about Gary. You may have gotten old or incorrect information.

I use Amazon Prime and I currently have 13GB (as a trial) of photos loaded into the cloud. All files ranging from TIFF, PSD, NEF,JPGs.

The only thing taking up my 5gb space is my folder system and a couple videos. Just trialed another set of photos that are strictly raw and no increasing to my 5gb allowed.

I have unlimited storage with my Flickr "Pro" account. Tried the Amazon trial, didn't care for it...

Um, 2 MB per image, per the Prime documentation that I looked at when I first looked into this, and in many articles still out there. At one point, that was the limit for still images. Video is still 2GB, or 20 minutes.) Having just tried a 4.4MB file, I might conclude that they've removed that limitation. But Google it. Not my imagination. But likely just stale data.

It must be stale information. I am shooting with a D800 and I can have JPGS that are up to 30MBs let alone my raws. I just downloaded all of my raws from 2015 and I have all of my 2014-2015 Completed images already in the cloud with no limitations on my 5GB. In my situation video is not important because I don't do any videography. The only thing that can be a pain with amazon cloud is that there is currently no automatic backup. This means that you shouldn't uploaded a chunk now and a chunk later, because you'll need to reorganize your files inside the cloud. I believe this will come in time, however until then for me loading photos into the cloud will be a process that I will do on regular intervals after I have completed certain dates so I know I will not be moving files through lots of folders.

I'm a Prime member, but don't store photos with Amazon.  I'd rather just keep things local.
