Tips on photographing Grand Canyon

8 years 5 months ago #462668 by Frisco
I'm planning a trip to the Grand Canyon in February and looking for some tips on best vantage points.  Any tours worth going on and any other activities that you can think of that might yield some good photo opportunities.

If you have photos from a trip you made, please share.   Thank you!

Nikon 18-55mm VR, Nikon 70-200mm VRII f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, SB-700 & SB-800

If you cannot find a good vantage point at the canyon then you are not looking hard enough. Just kidding.
Now that month can be tricky because of the weather. I will have to ask where you are staying the night before. This is important, but I will float you some options.
My preference for shooting the canyon is starting from the Desert View end, and working west. In this case if you can book a room at the Cameron Trading Post would be ideal. www.camerontradingpost.com/   Then you just get up an hour or so before sunrise. On the way there is the Little Colorado River Gorge, which is a fine photographic target on its own. Then you go into the park and work west following the sun. Also if you miss part of the western end of the park you can stay in Tusayan just south of the park there are 5 hotels down there. I prefer the Red Feather Lodge myself. Here is a link to the hotels available there. grandcanyoncvb.org/tusayan-lodging/   The reason I say to start from Desert View is you will get to see the whole south rim park, but because of the time of year you will not be able to get it in one day. So starting at Cameron you are not so hard pressed if you choose to stay in Tusayan, because then you can just go where you left off the previous day. Also they should have the whole park road open so you would not have to take the bus for part of it. If I remember right they close it around May until late November. Just remember to fuel up in Flagstaff, because gas is at bend over pricing on the Rez, and near the canyon. Just remember to check what the weather will be like when you plan on being up there, because it can snow feet easily. Also see if they have had any storm prior to your getting there, because then you will be slowed down from road conditions at the park. If you are careful it is no biggie.

If you have never been, take a helicopter trip. That was fantastic.
Not my best image from the canyon, just the first one I found.
