How long till physical camera filters obsolete?

8 years 4 months ago - 8 years 4 months ago #463297 by Rawley Photos
I know a few filters seemingly today would seem impossible to replicate.  However every time I jump into Photoshop or Lightroom and reflect on how these platforms have evolved over the years, man... can hardly imagine what sort of filters and features will be available in 5 or even 10 years from now.

The polarized filter will be the tough one to figure out from a software stand point.  Who knows, that might be a lens manufacture play?   Imagine that, transitional lenses that detect or manually can move to a 'polarized' mode?  Could be possible.

The camera sensors will have more to do with less of a need for ND grad filters maybe,  a much wider dynamic range will negate them to a point. There will be NO replacement for a two to ten stop ND for slowing down an exposure, or a polarizer. Many filters have already been rendered obsolete, I have a box of them myself.....

Why so serious?

:agree:  Good point.  And don't we all! Crappy part is  you can't even give these filters away, let alone sell them.

Can duplicate a polarized filter: example seeing beyond reflection of a pool of water.  How would software be able to clone that?

Canon 5D Mark II, 30D, 40D, 50 1.2L, 16-35 2.8L Mark II, 24-105 4L IS, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L IS, 85 1.8, 4 x 580 EX(II)

Polarized filter will never be replaced via software IMO.  Simply impossible.

That will be expensive to build into a lens.  It's more likely we will see it as an adaptive filter option.  So we still end up attaching it to the front of the lens.

ohwell
