Photographer for charity work

I'm about to respond to an ad I came across for charity work.  Any tips for taking on charity that you can share before I get on the phone with this organization?

What came to mind was that if they have money to run an ad, wouldn't they have money to pay a photographer? then realized it's maybe a freebie craigslist ad.

Doing work pro bono (not charging them) would be fine if you're familiar with the charity and want to donate your time and photos. Depends on what this is, larger charities do have budgets for operating expenses.

Make sure this is legit; lots of scams or even actual charity groups that are spending money people thought they donated for a charitable cause instead on other expenses.

+1 on watching out for scams. As for getting paid, most will have a budget for ad expenses. If not, get some sort of receipt that you can claim on your taxes....

Don't do any work until you have a contract signed stating exactly what it is that's expected of you for the time you're giving them. You don't want to give them carte blanche. Set limits. And like the others said, get a tax receipt!

Yeah, it was a Craigslist ad.  I'm guessing I should keep my radar up on this one!  You guys are great, thank you

I know several people that do a lot of shooting for charity. Most of the time it's for Special Olympics or something similar. It's good to give back to the community. It's not all about money folks.

+ 1 on that What Is Expected.

I once gave a nice lady a large landscape print, free.  Thought I was doing a nice gesture.  She was ticked that there was no frame!!!  People can have very odd presumptions about photography.
