Pricing photos for press

Hey guys, when pricing photos for use in press, where do you bench mark or gauge?  It's not as easy as pricing checking to see what others are charging.  The press won't tell you.  So how are you pricing?

There's no simple answer, but here's some NPPA guidelines

Most press outlets have a set price for generic shots that they buy, so it varies from market to market. Now this is subject to change if you are the only one with the content of some specific event, or tragedy. Then you decide the price, and who holds the rights to sell those images. Because some press outlets will buy them from you, and then sell them to other outlets. It is then (depending on what the subject is) up to you on their rights to use, and who holds all rights. If the event is important enough, or the photo is, it can be potentially valuable, and you only want to give limited use rights, and define the publication of the photos.

+1 on this.

All of the publications I've written and shot for have set prices for images and word count payments...
