I wouldn't expect the camera industry to collapse any time soon. Maybe the increase of camera sales have to do with the new technology? Now that cameras are made a little sturdier and people have to upgrade less often, perhaps sale are going down as a whole.

Actually, if you look at the graph properly, you will see that DSLR's, as a proportion of camera sales in a given year, have actually been INCREASING year by year...

That's a good thing!

Jeebus, the sky is falling again. Some should ignore the media...

Why so serious?

The problem with articles like this is that they approach it from a very ambitious broad approach.  There is a little truth, however they don't approach it from the specific angle they should.  For example, point and shoot compact camera sales are going  and disappearing.  However this article doesn't get specific and really disclose that.  Instead they paint a gloom picture for the industry in whole.  Which is an inaccurate representation.

If the camera industry is going to collapse due to people opting for a cell phone, then, seeing as you can watch video on them too, I guess the TV screen manufacturers are similarly about to go extinct...

No, wait...a cell phone screen is pathetic compared to a 50 or 60 inch TV screen...

...just like a cell phone camera is pathetic compared to an SL/R with a set of lenses...

Look, cell phones just look like the next big thing because so many self obsessed children use then 24 hours a day, real people use the right tool for the job...

I look forward to the day that those tiny sensors & optics equal DSLR's. I will probably be long gone by then....
