Best way to clean a camera sensor in the field?

7 years 4 months ago #507742 by TedReichner
I went out this morning and while out realized I had some crude on my sensor that was leaving annoying dots in all my shots.  I tried to clean by blowing on it, however I think I only made it worse.

How are you cleaning your sensor in cases like this, while in the field and with limited resources?

The best is to NOT attempt a sensor cleaning in the "field". It should be done in as much a controlled environment as possible, clean work area, no dust, no wind, etc....

Why so serious?

Yeah I would not clean a sensor out in the field. Just live with the problem, and post work the spots out later. Also shoot wider f-stops until you get home, unless they are showing up at f/1.4, then I would say you should have noticed it needed cleaning long before that.

Just leave it alone till you get home.  Otherwise you can just create larger problems for you.

Yikes. I'm on the same page as the others on this one; there's no best way when you're out and about to clean a sensor.

Boy that is asking for more trouble.  Wait till you get home and do then.

There's a funny (don't think it was originally intended) video floating around of a guy changing his lens and then trying to clean his cameras sensor with a blower at Burning Man festival.  If you know the festival, it's extremely dusty there.

I'm guessing that person must have destroyed their cameras sensor!

Reminds me when I first got my camera, I swapping out lens freely during heavy winds.  Man that sensor got dirty!
