How to set yourself apart as a photographer?

When you are in a tight market with other photographers.  Can I ask what you have found to work in terms of separating you apart from others?

I have prospects that ask me how I'm a better fit.  With out talking trash about others, how do you make that separation?

With any business it should be the quality of your work that does all of the speaking for you. When I was doing construction it was my work that got me more clients. I did mostly add-ons, and such. I did it for a couple of years, but then decided for me it was more of a headache than it was worth.
So you just show your portfolio with as many genres of photography that you do. If what you show people is better than they will use you. If they cannot see the difference in the work then most likely they would have been PITAs to deal with. The problem today is that you are dealing with a market that has, as a majority, a CL mentality. Only quality clients are worth getting and they will see the difference. The more diverse you are in what you will shoot, will be a major factor in how much work you get.

Loaded question.  Short answer:  go to as many trade shows and practice practice practice.  While finding a corner of the market you can corner.
