Spraying canvas prints to protect them?

6 years 9 months ago #535506 by Ben Vanderbilt
Is there any need with spraying canvas prints these days?  I have a client who is persistent with the request.  I shared with him that the canvas these days, when ordered from quality shop is much better than in the past.

He was talking about using varnish!  Yeah, this one is a old timer.  First time ordering prints from me though.

Let me know.  Thanks

You are correct, plus I believe most canvas shops when needed will spray the canvas with protectant.  *Last part I'm not 100% on.

Tell him varnish will destroy the print, which it will if he uses an oil based varnish. Also add that the print shops already add a coating to them. But be prepared that they will not listen, and possibly destroy it, and want a new one for free. So I would tell them if the print gets ruined they will have to pay for a replacement.

Wasn't varnish for the old school oil paintings?

No oil paintings never needed varnish, it tends to yellow over time. The only thing I use varnish on is wood such as floors, and furniture.

The varnish was used in old days for oil paintings and many times varnish destroys prints which is not a good idea.

You can buy a spray-on UV protectant, and I believe many labs offer it, too. If the print is indoors it likely needs no additional "help" as the ink should be pigment-based (not dye) and is thereforem much better at retaining it's color. But a quick google will find you products that can satisfy your customer's request. I'd find a lab that does it for you, myself.

In any event, a decent canvas should last 75 years. Is he wanting something to last longer?
