Why no funeral photographers?

There are portrait photographers...

There are wedding photographers...

There are newborn photographers...

There are fashion photographers...

And the list goes on...

However there aren't any funeral photographers.  Why is that?  Is it even worth pursuing from a marketing standpoint?  Seems like a good market opportunity.

Probably because most people are strange about death, and the ceremonies associated with it. Yeah I would have no problem with shooting them either. Get that last photo of granny in the box before she becomes worm meat. I like to pronounce it fuhneral myself. You could have a Ringling Bros Circus Mortuary with a clown hearse, and all sorts of gags on the way to the resting yard.

Another reason, the survivors are probably still in shock from the passing, then the obscene burial costs. Auntie or uncle has a phone camera anyway, and how many poses is a corpse going to give you?

Why so serious?

It's gotten much more traction in the European markets for what ever reason.

I have done it 3 times. You get used to it. The last time, the family hired a videographer.

Can't say I've noticed it....
Most people like to look back at birthday parties and weddings etc.
A well organized funeral is a good way to say good bye - but who likes to be reminded of funerals?

I would guess because most don't want to photograph the sadness and would prefer to focus on the more cheerful segments of life to capture.

Honestly for me, it's just an area I have no interest in.

In all seriousness there'a pretty interesting history behind post mortem photography. Wasn't exactly along the lines of event shooting, but families used to commission photographers for their dead loved ones frequently

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-mortem_photography

To me, they're really interesting but a bit creepy. Probably why it's not something you see all that often these days.

It's not exactly a cheerful side of life, which is why most likely don't venture into this side of work.
