Taking a loan for camera gear?

6 years 3 months ago #565551 by Frost Photography
My brother just surprised the family.  After 21 years with the same company, he just picked up and left them.  AND took out a $30,000 load to buy a bunch of camera gear to start a wedding photography business!

I've only seen him with a Sony NEX 7 at most at family events.  He has no formal education or experience either.  :pinch:

He knows I'm a full time wedding and portrait photographer so figured anyone can pick up and just "do business".

And you know what he asked me today?  "Where do you find your clients"?  Man!  If it was that easy.  Geez, I wish he asked me first.

"The quickest way to make money at photography is to sell your camera."

So, your post isn't about taking out a loan for equipment, it's about poor life choices.

That going to be possibly one of those tough lessons learned.  I hope he makes it and doesn't find himself running from the repo man.

If I do use credit to buy something, I'm paying it off the same month.

Ouch, well I hope he figures out fast what it takes to survive.  Desire is nice, but he really should have thought about his game plan a bit more prior.

OH no, photographer intervention needed!

Well I hope the best for him, many have done similar and many have had huge success.  It will require focus and a game plan.

Really? You know of someone that has made this work, with these parameters?

Yeah, I'm awaiting the success story on something like described. However, if he buys really nice gear, the pictures he takes are bound to be good!!!

Well I thought a few minutes before responding.  One side of me is thinking this guy is just secured his seat in the Darwin Business Award ceremony.   While the other part of me hopes he makes better decisions moving forward.

I just don't understand how some people who look into self employment so blindly.  Underestimating the research and common sense that is needed to start a business.  It's no wonder why statically most businesses are expected to fail in the first 2 years.  I hate to say it, the likely hood of this guy succeeding is off to a rough start. And likely will end up as a crazy tax write off, long term debt, and future ammo his wife will use against him.

If the $30k is chicken feed to him, why not? After 21 years at the same desk I could be ready for a drastic change too.

He could study Anne McKinnell, who left it all, bought a trailer and began a traveling landscape blog, which has blossomed. I believe she was quite experienced prior to the bail out, and she didn't touch "wedding photography" though.....
