Does more Megapixels uncover greater lens flaws?

6 years 2 months ago #568892 by Rawley Photos
I recently picked up a D800 and noticed something with some of my lenses.  I don't have any special equipment that I'm testing this with, just eye balling my shots on my computer.

I noticed with some of my lenses, a shot taken with my D300 (12MP) would be sharp and look great all over, then taken with the D800 (36MP) would have soft edges or seem slightly distorted.

Now I know obviously with more MP, means more detail.  So does that mean enlargement size of the image due to more MP, will uncover blemishes in some lenses?

Could be technique, are you doing those test shots handheld? The D800 is less forgiving of camera shake....

Why so serious?

The old formula of "1/ (effective [full-frame] focal length)" had to rewritten for sensors like the D800, D850, the new Sony´s and the Canon 5DsR.
Without any IS or VR assistance the shutter speed should be double the focal length unless your hand holding technique is exemplary.
Try testing against a Spyder target, use your normal shutter speed then use a tripod with remote, you´ll soon work out whether you need double the focal length or somewhere in between..

:agree:  and that is largely due to the increase of megapixels

A lot also depends on how you are viewing the image. 100% zoomed in is a much different size area wise between a 12 or 36 mp image. Adjust the area viewed to equal sizes and you may see a totally different outcome.

Interesting thought here.  I would think there would be, after all there are more pixels working to pull out light and detail.  Right?

It's more than just megapixels involved here. The aperture of the lens used will play a part as well as the image processor...
