No they can't and it would take everything I have not to want to wack that person in the head if they grab my gear.

Not being able to see the whole situation, such as the neighborhood, if their were other like minded idiots or friends nearby, or honestly if the guy looked at you, at correctly of not, decided in his head you were someone he could push around, it's tough to say.
I think you should have whipped out your phone, and on speaker, called the police. While you were waiting for the police, you could have kept on shooting, and informed this moron that the cops are on the way, if he didn't hear.
He probably would have melted away into the surroundings, giving you plenty of time to take photos. If someone is a big enough jackass to act like that, I give even money, they are no virgin to law enforcement. Which means they hate interactions with police. Informing them they are a few minutes away, probably would have been enough.
If you were still their when they showed, just tell them the truth. They (police) probably would not even have gotten out of their car at that point.

Did you reed this entire thread? Because you should. The recap about the idiot that killed a guy over parking in the handicap spot, when he was looking to start trouble, is a reminder that discretion is the better part of valor. We don't know what motivates someone, so the wisest strategy seems to be diffuse and get away.

You can't fix stupid.

So so true, as much as I would want to say something.  I would true to defuse the situation, far to many crazy's out there.  You just never know, and these days, turning on the news is a stark reminder of that!

Some people are just weird and feel they are entitled to make up laws. Try not to cause a scene, but you are allowed, by law.

He answered with “no concern of yours” because he has no authority. Authority figures will folks will identify themselves to you or have a badge etc

:agree:   Yep, I'm with you on this one

That you have rights to photograph things from public property is not the debate here, the issue is weighing a situation for a picture that could escalate to an incident, possibly even deadly. We've seen it before over far less.....

True, and it's becoming lower point of entry for these volatile mentally compromised people.  Thanks to the media.

Maybe you could go across the street than take a telephoto shot of THE GUY, and take it over to the police station.  They might be looking for him
