Traveling with a knife overseas (Sweden)?

5 years 5 months ago #614149 by Jerrid
I'm traveling to Sweden 2nd week in Jan 2019 and will be photographing the northern lights.  I'll be out in the sticks by myself. Here when I head out, I always have an 8" knife with me.  I know bringing this as a carry on is out of the question.  However can this be checked below in my checked bag?

I've not traveled with a knife before, however if packed in your checked bags, I'd think it'd be OK.  You might want to check with the airline or TSA

Definitely check ahead, that knife will most likely disappear from your luggage at some point.

Why so serious?

We just drove into and out of Canada, and were asked about weapons, including knives, at both border crossings. You might want to check with customs about that.

Interesting -  www.tsa.gov/news/releases/2005/10/07/tsa...pack-care-air-travel

In my search I noticed this, might be worth looking at laws in Sweden:

"While it's technically legal to bring it into the UK, there are three things to consider.UK laws on carrying such a knife. A lock knife is an illegal weapon, regardless of the blade size. ... Therefore, as long as the knife stays in your luggage, packed in the original bag/wrap, you can get it to your home."

"SwedenSwedish law prohibits the carrying of knives in public areas, including schools and vehicles at these areas, if the carrier intends to use the knife as a weapon in the commission of a crime. ... Carrying a weapon for self-defence does not count as a legitimate purpose."

I'd leave it home, you won't need it.

Whats ironic is that you need the knife more here in the U.S. than you do in Sweden or other Scandinavian countries, which are very safe (r) places compared here, with far less crime.  I don't think you'll need a knife, I would risk the hassle.

If you read some statistics, it turns out that this isn't necessarily true.

Whether the need one or not, you can't have one while there, it seems. Kinda moot.

Correct on the stats, a lot of European nations aren't as safe as they once were....

Why so serious?
