How come we don't have 2k or 3k video?

Just thinking...

Wouldn't this be an easier read out speed for many camera sensors.  Seems like something in the middle of 1080p and 4k would be a good fit, especially for mobile and general home use.  When you think about it, when 1080p was the king of the hill, we had 720p between that and low end 480p.

So why not a 2k or 3k?

Nomenclature is just ridiculous.

1080p is a vertical value. 4K is a horizontal value.

1080p is HD, which is between 1440 and 1920 pixels in the horizontal. The value is flexible, unfortunately.

And, it turns out, that's 2K.

4K is twice HD, or 2 x 1980, or 3840 pixels horizontal, and 2 x 1080p = 2160p vertical.

1920 is 2 * 960 = 3 * 640 = 3 * SD resolution, or what was originally used for DVDs. Which started out as 640 x 480 or 4 x 3 aspect ratio, to fit televisions. Widescreen (720 horizontal) came later, which was 16 x 9, which helped define HD width. 720p and 1080p are both considered HD  for vertical resolution. As is 1280 horizontal.

I'm not sure how we got from 480p to 720p to 1080p. Need to Google that for details.

Mobile devices have a wide variety of resolutions, many non-standard.

1080p is still the king of the hill. There's not much in 4K, certainly not most broadcast video, devices and cable. Having dealt with it this year, I'm not a fan because of the codec. HD is much nicer, IMO.

Keeping what Gary said in mind, correct me if I'm wrong, however there is no native 3k resolution displays to view this on.  Which means you would still need to render that 3k video one of the legacy formats in order to do anything with it.
