Starting own website tips

5 years 1 month ago #637399 by CodyLaskey
Hey everyone, I'm thinking about setting up a website to start selling my photography (currently I just do it as a hobby). I was just wondering if people could let me know of their experiences of setting up their own websites. What program did you use to set up your website, was it difficult, did you just sell your photography as digital images to start with? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cody

I make my living in e-commerce and I develop my own websites.  The requirements to do what I do the way I do include some tech saavy.  Since you ask the question, I will assume that you aren't ready for that.  So your best bet will be to use one of the ready-to-use ecommerce platforms that are designed for non programmers.  You will need some way to get paid - Paypal may do the trick for you. You will need domain name and a host.  I think the software providers can help you get that done.  Be sure the platform provides for downloads so that they can retrieve the image file the buy.  I have no experience with BigCommerce but they are pretty well known in that end of the industry.  A link is below:

You know Cody, I would suggest you look at SmugMug or Zenfolio.  Both of these companies offer robust websites for photographers.  They are easy to set up, and are relatively inexpensive compared to doing yourself.

I used to be a professional photog (news) and I still maintain a number of pro friends.  A lot of them use Smugmug for selling their stuff as it is already setup for such service. The site has different templets and I believe customization is possible.  Plus, their platform is very stable and when you call, you get an actual human at their office in California.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.
