Astrophotography equipment - Celestron 6"

13 years 2 months ago #28336 by Conner
I've been looking at used telescopes on Craigslist and found one I think is a pretty good deal from what I see, but I was wondering if anyone had one. It's a 6" Celestron. Seller said they have all receipts showing it was $7400 new and he was selling for $3200, and that the unit was basically brand new.

I would like to get shots of other planets, stars and what ever else I can view with a good telescope.

I'm heading over to his place on Friday to view this. I'm hoping to do all the research ahead of time.

Thank you

Well astrophotography can be and will be a love hate relationship. The 6" will be OK for it if it is a Schmidt-Cass which I bet it is. You will need a mount adapter for your camera to go into the focuser. For some shots you may need a field flattener/foacl reducer. It will reduce the f-ratio from f/11 to f/6 which hels alot with cutting the exposure times down. I would read that site effron posted. For greater magnification though you can shoot afocally or through the telescope with an eyepiece and a 50mm lens on the camera body set to infinity. But for that they dont make adapters so you will have to make your own.

Are you questioning the sale price this guy is offering? Why don't you look it on the company's website to see how much that model cost, when it first came out etc.. to determine if it's worth the price.

He might have done you a favor. Why don't you start small, go shoot some star trails and if you get energized, just get a German EQ mount, or build a barn door mount and take some long exposures. You don't need to start with a Hubbell set up, and don't need a telescope, at least at first. Build up to it.......
