Damaging camera sensor from cleaning it

4 years 10 months ago #648818 by Nefarious
I decided to buy one of those self sensor cleaning kits on Amazon and it get's here tomorrow.  So I have my Saturday planned out now.  I was just thinking about this, how durable are these sensors?  Let me ask this another way, are these pretty forgiving for a newcomer sensor-cleaner?

Just want to get my plan nailed down.  Had been planning to relax with a bottle of win my wife bought me this week and clean my camera.  If cleaning own sensor is a delicate PITA, than I might wait to crack open that wine till later.   Just to play it safe.  :toocrazy:

I watched a tutorial on YouTube before doing mine. We have no one local that works on cameras and my sensor has gotten big dust bunnies very frequently, and using the “air rocket” doesn’t blow any of it off. I bet in one month I had to clean it 10 times.

fingers crossed, I haven’t seemed to mess it up yet. Just remember to use the correct size swabs and only make one pass. I had to use the cleaning solution almost every time too.

Awesome, I don't suppose you have that video handy.  I just went over there and found a zillion videos!  Because this can be a make or break procedure, I'd feel more comfortable with a recommendation.  Can I ask what video you watched?

Thanks!

I use the Eyelead system… no risk whatsoever!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Yes, Ted, that's the thing…
and you can choose for which sensor size too!

I have built my own PCs and know how to be careful around sensitive electronic equipment, for example putting a cpu on the motherboard can be tricky to do. Though I wouldn't know about today's cpus as I haven't built a computer in a long time.

I clean my sensors on my cameras as I don't want to pay someone else to do it when it only takes 10-15 minutes to do. What I do when I clean my camera's sensor is to make sure I have plenty of time to do it so I don't feel rush and I have no distractions like the TV or someone might come barging into the room. Even though it doesn't take much time to clean a sensor, I don't care how long it takes to do it.

Tony Northrup has a good video on how to clean a camera's sensor - just search for it on YouTube.
