Safe to walk around NYC with DSLR camera at night?

As a guy, I would walk around, but would only have camera body and lens.  I'd have my tripod in hand ready to swing.

Everything I'd like to photograph in NY would be exactly the areas I shouldn't be with a camera, is where the genuine is. Nowadays I believe anyone that does serious street photography uses a compact camera for many reasons, one is the people don't see you as a photographer, that is where you capture a moment, also if they see you as a photographer photographing them, or not even them, just something that they might be included, you'll probably get yourself into trouble, the other reason is obviously security reasons. Unless you're just interested in the architecture, I wouldn't use a DSLR camera anywhere, in any city.
