Using a low cut filter

4 years 6 months ago #660437 by Mason Latka
I saw another mic question here and this reminded about a question I have about my new mic I got.   I was recently given a Deity V-Mic D3 Pro.  Honestly I don't know squat about audio stuff.  If I'm being honest, I'm kind of green all around.  Now I have gone to and looked up what a low cut filter is, and get that it cuts low noise beyond a certain signal.  But when a mic has two settings, how do you know which to use?

For example this Deity mic has two settings 75 and 150.  How do you know what frequencies are around you?

It will remove low signal frequencies from 25 to 150Hz, me thinks....Use either setting.

Why so serious?

This covers both low cut and high cut filters.  Very good explanation.

Kick drums are in the 80-100 Hz range. The point is to eliminate rumble, and thuds/other noises. You can safely use the 75 Hz setting, and apply additional EQ in post, or just use the 150 setting. No one's going to miss anything down there.

How do I know? Life-long musician, engineer, producer.
