How come cameras don't automatically update firmware?

Nearly every other electronics update themselves on their own.  Why aren't cameras doing this?

Seems like a reasonable thing to add. Huh?

Not sure, but they also don't make coffee. Maybe it would be the cost factor?

Why so serious?

1) Update how? I.e. by what mechanism?
2) Firmware, in general, doesn't need updating very often during the lifetime of a product. Computers would be an exception, and I know of no computer that updates itself. Thus, to which devices do you refer?
3) Firmware updates usually exist to fix a problem. Few manufacturers (Fuji?) produce updates with new features. The recent Z7 update added function, but that's a first for Nikon AFIAK.
4) Some of us despise software updating itself. Take Windows 10 updates as an example: consistently awkwardly timed, no way to fully control it, or deny them. We hates that, we does.

All that to say that I think your suggestion would be solving a problem that mostly doesn't exist.

Well with the exception of anti-virus software on my computer, no software or apps on my phone are allowed to auto update.  Not sure I would want a direct connection to the internet with my camera.

Hey now that would be great!  Expresso oozing out from the lens.

How often do you connect your camera to the internet. My guess is not often. I like to control updates to my electronics. I wait a while to update even my tablet, laptop and phone until I know the update has been a success. I do not like to be the one running on a cwheel in a cage.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
