Would you use a 85mm for landscapes?

I have chance to pick up a 85mm for a very good price.  Would you consider this lens/focal length a good lens for shooting landscapes?  I know it's awesome for portraits, just not sure about landscapes?

A scene is a subject and a subject is captured with a
lens… ANY lens. I shoot landscapes with any thing be-
tween 14 and 600 mm

Light is free… capturing it is not!

"Would you use a 85mm for landscapes?"

Yes, of course.

Why so serious?

All it's going to do is magnify, which gives you some reach.

N.B. at my photo club last week we discussed an image that had been taken with a 400mm lens, because that's what it took to get the shot.

Suggest: stop overthinking it. You'll love an 85.

Thank you.  I wasn't overthinking at all.  Just a question as I don't have an endless pile of cash under my bed.  So would rather make buying decisions that give me the best shots possibilities for what I'm shooting.

Man 400mm and 600mm would be nice, but just out of my budget.

Clearly, you need a bigger bed then!

Yes, and they're even expensive to rent.

I was only trying to make a point: any lens can be used for landscapes. Coupled with access and hiking, you can get what you want.

All that to say, if you do any portrait work, you'll love an 85, for that and more.

One of the best lenses to have in your camera bag that can not only be used for great portraits, but landscapes and product photography too.  Very versatile lens.

I recently moved from Sony to Canon (still staying with Nikon for primary) and have my eye on the Canon 85mm.  I'd rather have this focal length than 100mm.  It's great for B roll lens, and portraits, but I don't shoot portraits, other than my son and wife.  So, I'd use it for what ever got in front of my lens!  Mostly video :)

The 85 mm is a standard, versatile lens and it can be used for portraits and landscapes. Neat little lens!

Ask most pro photographers which prime lens do they use the most, I'd bet a 85mm comes up more than any other prime.  Just saying.

Canon 7D, 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 70-200mm L f/2.8, 100mm and 17-55mm f/2.8

85mm is a very versatile lens that is much more than a portrait lens.  Yes, it would do very well as a landscape lens.
