Metering and adjusting shutter speed together

4 years 4 months ago #669893 by thomianguy
Ok, my photos come out "soft." There's a cloudy edge to them as opposed to that sharp look. Of course, if I zoom in, you see why they look that way and it is motion blur OR not all things in the picture are in focus.

I've read a few places where it seems as though it has to do with my shutter speed on my Canon T2i with original lens, but my question is, when I meter to bring the meter pointer to the center, it automatically changes my shutter speed accordingly. In most cases, I heard to set it to at least 1/50, but if I move it to that point, the meter may move too far to the right or too far to the let and you end up with a very dark or extremely light photo. So, how are photographers able to change one WITHOUT affecting the other?  .

Simple: shoot in manual mode.

What mode are you using?

Get out of automatic mode.

If you shoot in aperture priority and have auto-ISO enabled, you will likely get better results. Or shutter priority and stay above (faster than) 1/160s for handheld shots. And even then....

If you want crisp, 1/400s for still subjects in daylight, 1/1000s for slowly moving subjects.

Bingo.

Why so serious?

Telling someone to shoot in manual mode that has a tenuous grasp on what is going on is just throwing gas on a fire. Gary's solution is best until they understand how aperture, shutter speed and ISO all work in unison.
