Iceland or Faroe Islands - photography trip?

4 years 5 months ago #670391 by Alex
Let me get your opinion on something.  For a 2020 trip, I'm on the fence between these locations.  I was originally planning on heading to Iceland, however noticed that the Faroe Islands have some really interesting coast lines.

I was thinking towards Feb or March when the Northern lights are out.  Technically it would be in Feb as that is on the back end of the optimum Northern light window for this area.

Just would like to get your thoughts, your opinion.  Which island would you go to?

I would go for the Faroe Island — just because I haven't
there yet. In any case don't underestimate the spectacu-
lar nature of these destinations and take wide and long
lenses too!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Faroe Islands or Ireland for 2020 for me.  Both have those cliffs you are referencing.

So, my vote is Faroe Islands.

The British Isles have amazing coasts. Just sayin'.

That said, the Faroe Islands would be my choice. Based on a quick google for images...

I just Googled Shetlands, WOW.  Never even heard of that island.  I've just added that one to my bucket list.

Have you been there?

Alex out of Iceland or Faroe Islands - Faroe Islands all the way.  I don't think the Northern Lights will be as bright as in Iceland though.  Weren't you in Norway this year for the Northern Lights?

For me, my vote is Iceland all the way.  I've wanted to go there since 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' came out.

Go with Faroe Islands, that will be someplace pretty slick.  Those coast lines are something!

When are you looking to go? How accessible is Faroe Islands during winter months?  All the photos I see are with no snow there.  Just saying, you might want to consider how easy it is to get around.

You mention February for your timeframe, but I'll add here that the Faroe Islands will be closed for maintenance a few days in April:

Well it looks like Faroe Islands will be it.  I've been looking at some of the photos and WOW.  This place looks amazing.  Gary, weren't you just in Ireland?  The high cliffs here remind me a bit of some of the high cliffs in Ireland.
