Sensor having anti-aliasing filter or not?

I came across the term 'anti-aliasing filter' and have started to dig into it.  Now from what I can see are photographers pro for having it, and others not.  Is this like a UV filter where some think its a good investment and others consider having a UV a waste of $$?

It was there to control moire, not really an issue with the modern sensors. I have one with and one without. Neither is ever a problem.

Why so serious?

I opted for two of the D800E (without anti-aliasing filter) and
I had to pay more (+/- 200€ each). Critical for me, as always,
was the sharpness I couldn't do without.

The hype lasted until, and was given up, with the D810 that did
not have it at all.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

l'm with Nikon Shooter.  I think the lack of a moire filter is one of the reasons my Fuji X system cameras make such sharp, crisp images.  The filter, after all, introduces some blurring to hide the moire.  The lack of one was an important consideration for choosing the system in the first place.

Cameras without an anti-aliasing filter will produce sharper images but are more likely to exhibit moire. The opposite is true if they have the filter. That's all there is to it. It's not a huge difference either way.

An AA filter becomes less a factor with higher resolution sensors as well. Pixel peepers might notice but if you're practicing proper technique it shouldn't mean much.

Why so serious?

Moire is more of a problem for video than stills.

I'm Ok with a moderate AA filter. Unfortunately it's not easy to determine which bodies have strong AA filters.
