How much to charge to license photo for commercial use

I have a company that wants to use 5 of my photos for some upcoming products of theirs.  They have not disclosed the exact product other than it's prints of some sort.  They are asking for a flat rate license for each photo.

Would this be based on distribution?  If so, when I asked this, they didn't know how many people would potentially buy the end product.  So now what?

How would you price license this?

You'll need to get more information. Why do they want prints? for office decor?? Doesn't sound like it! Find out how they intend to use them. I don't get how they'd be using prints on end products, or why they can't say how many.

Usually for brochures, pamphlets, etc. usage would be per print run and you'd need to know how many. Then if they want to do another print run later on to distribute more brochures, you'd need to contract for the extended use.

Get on asmp.org or PPA for info. from pro photographers organizations on how to do contracts, license usage, etc. etc. Both have links to a pricing guide.

This has red flags all over it. Sounds like either this company has no clue about licensing usage for their business, or they're trolling around to find someone to give them usage of photos real cheap. Don't let yourself get taken advantage of, it happens all the time because people are sharing photos and don't know how to license them when asked. Learn what needs to be done so you go into this being knowledgeable.

Surely they have some idea of their market?

At the very least, how many units are going to be produced? Sales is their problem; production is what you care about, and what pricing is usually based upon.

Use Getty Images to get some idea of pricing, or invest in FotoQuote. Then work with them to find out how this expense fits into their budget.

And congratulations.
