When on vacation, will you bring a off camera flash with you?

I know, no one is traveling right now.  My wife and I just had some laughs about some of our trips from last year and all the gear I would bring with me.  One item that I always brought was a flash, and I don't think I have ever used the flash when traveling in the last few years of trips!

LOL go figure.

Do you bring one?

Nothing of what is worth remembering can have any
value at all without light. I always always a flash along.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Ok let me re-frame, do you have anything that you bring and never end up using?

Ok let me re-phrase too: do I have anything that I bring and end up not using?

Yes… a flash, a lens or two, the extra body… coud be anything
but I like to be ready for (almost) everything!

I don't mind the weight and, even on holidays,  I won't leave
home without it.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

If flying, then no. If I'm driving, then I take everything.

Yes, I will bring everything that I can fit, that I might use.

Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

WELL!

I thought I was on my own and only person that brings, just in case.  Good to see others setting up camp here too.

I don't fly much anymore so when with the car,
I will even carry the B2… just in case.

I always have a flash with me.  I would rather carry around a little extra weight then not have the light when I want it.

I pack for a vacation as lightly as possible.  One small camera with with a zoom lens is it.  If it was a gig then I pack for every contingency.  It is the difference between needing to get every shot and not needing it.

Depends on the trip, where we are going and how long.

Yeah, mine is usually always in my camera bag. I don't use it much, but it's there.

I'll only bring what I need.   Generally speaking, if I don't have a need for it before I head off, I won't bring it.  I would rather bring a larger variety of lenses when traveling seeing that I prefer to shoot landscapes and nature vs people.

The answer, as usual, is "it depends". It depends on what kind of shots you hope to get, and how you plan to use your camera. Flash is beneficial for shots where there is not enough ambient light and the area to be lit is fairly small. It is also very useful when you need to fill or to overcome extremely backlit subjects, such as when you must face the sun or a very bright window.

Flash can be useful indoors, in churches, museums, and other such places. However, a flash will do very little to light an entire church, but might be useful for a statue or a few elements of detail you wish to capture. However, many places forbid flashes, as the cumulative light damages artifacts and artwork. So, instead of a flash for indoor travel photography, you would be better off with a tripod, and simply setting the camera on a slower shutter speed to capture your subject.

So, my recommendation is that for travel photography, forget the flash. Buy a tripod instead, put a small flashlight in your pocket, and carry something to use as a reflector.
