Why not cameras with swappable sensors?

I know expensive medium format cameras can swap out their digital backs.  Why hasn't the everyday cameras come out with swappable sensors?  Seems to me that would be something people would like to have.  Think about it, you buy a camera with an entry level sensor, you grow into your photography skills and later want to upgrade to higher performance sensor.  Seems to me camera makers could make more money from upgrades and installations.  AND there would be more camera pride/retention?

What do you think?

Not saying that this won't be possible in the future, but do you have a clean room and microscope, plus the tools needed to do this? I think keeping your lenses and upgrading the camera body is the best way to do this at this time.

When new models come out, usually more than just the sensor is upgraded.

Sensors are pretty delicate. Replacing the sensor is different from replacing a camera back. Medium format lends itself well to removable and replaceable camera backs, while 35mm does not.

Why would they?  That would cut new camera sales!

LOL seriously?  Why would they even consider this?  This would cut sales by a huge amount.
